November is that time of the year when many firms assess what has happened over the past 10 months and start to make plans for the next year. In this case, the view ahead is to 2020, to the next decade. If you are one of these planners, you might want to step back and take a look at the big picture.
The Book
Tom Friedman wrote a book back in 2016 and if you are busy, as most of us are, you may have missed his latest book “Thank You for Being Late.” The title seems a little strange but captures the essence of the book. You feel the world you live in at work and at home is accelerating at an ever-increasing pace. If you have an appointment and the person shows up late, that unscheduled time provides an opportunity to reflect.
What’s Going On?
We, humans, are used to experiencing a linear world. Distance and time are a straight line, e.g. 1, 2, 3, 4, etc. However, Moore’s law is an example of exponential acceleration, e.g. 1, 2, 4, 16, etc. The result of exponential growth is that it moves slowly up and then accelerates amazingly fast. Mr. Friedman being from Minnesota compares it to a hockey stick. From a small base, it all of a sudden shoots straight up.
Hockey Stick Factors
It would be challenging for humanity to deal with one major event. However, there are three major forces changing our world all at the same time. They are:
- Technology (Moore’s law) e.g. The Cloud, AI, Deep Learning, robots, etc.
- The Market (Globalization) e.g. international competition, imports/exports, etc.
- Nature (Climate Change) e.g. more weather extremes such as droughts, floods, etc. loss of biodiversity, etc.
Planning Blind
If you are making plans for 2020 and not taking into consideration the impact of technology, globalization, and climate change; you are making a big mistake. One or all of these will impact your company. More importantly, the impact they will have is accelerating. The question is not if they will have an impact on your company, but how. And that’s where we can help you manage the chaos that comes with growth.
The Coaching Factor
Every sport at every level from grade school to high school on to college and the professional leagues have coaches to help athletes (the Team) continue to grow and improve. The coach’s role is to help people perform at their highest level and help them reach new levels. If it works so well in sports, it makes sense for business, too. But few do.
Is Coaching Worth It?
What do you think winning teams would say? We all know stories of teams that had losses that exceeded their winnings in a year. Then a new coach is hired and the next year with basically the same players, same facilities, same schedule of opponents, etc., but the team ends up with totally different results. The team has a winning season or maybe a near-perfect season. Over and over again, experience shows that a good coach makes all the difference
Why a Coach
You don’t know what you don’t know. For example, before reading this you probably didn’t know about the three major forces changing the world. Likewise, while most CEO’s and their management team are good at working in their business, they often are not good at working on the business. Hiring a business coach will provide an outside, objective, fresh look at your business and the challenges it is facing. This can be a game-changer.
