The Challenge of Defining Top 5 Business Challenges

If you were asked to name your Top 5 Challenges, could you do it? Why is this important? It’s like the difference between having goals and having written goals. The difference is HUGE.
Similarly, being able to succinctly describe those challenges is HUGE, too. No doubt you’ve heard “If you can name it, you can fix or solve it.” But, you should know that often the challenges you will name are not the actual ones. The actual challenge is most often hidden beneath what the challenge appears to be. For example, you may state finding employees is the problem when in fact the real challenge is employee turnover with issues stretching from recruitment to interviewing to orientation to training to performance evaluations.
If you are a small business owner (meaning you have less than 500 employees), then you’ll be interested in the research findings of James Fischer. Based on interviews and working with 650 CEO’s in 35 different industries, he was able to identify 7 Stages of Growth that firms pass through. He found that as businesses grew, the complexity level increased, and that complexity was due to the addition of people. The findings apply to firms from a start-up with 1 employee to those with 500 employees. In this research, he also found that businesses face 27 different challenges as they grow through these 7 Stage of Growth™.
The 27 Challenges specifically relate to the Stage of Growth™ your company is in. At each Stage of Growth, the Top 5 Challenges change. For example, in Stage 2 (11-19 employees) the top challenge is Hiring Quality People while at Stage 3 (20-34 employees) it is Staff Buy-in. Moreover by putting specific words to the challenges it makes it possible to address and fix the challenge. Even better is that by knowing the next Top 5 Challenges you will face in your next Stage of Growth™, you are better able to prepare for what is coming next.
The 27 Challenge Assessment is an opportunity for you to determine for yourself your Top 5 Challenges. The process is simple.
1. Review all 27 challenges,
2. Select your Top 5, and
3. Place them in order from most important and pressing to least.
Once you complete the 27 Challenge Assessment, you will be able to compare your Top 5 Challenges with the findings from the research by James Fischer. Will there be a difference? Possibly because one of the rules that govern the 7 Stages of Growth states that time will make a difference. For example, if you have been a Stage 2 Company with 18 employees for the past 5-10 years, then hopefully you have solved most of the Stage 2 challenges and are now on to dealing with Stage 3 challenges.
